MacKenzie, John
   b. 1932
   Film-maker
   An Edinburgh film-maker, John McKenzie produced television features in the early 1970s, and made his name with The Long Good Friday (1980), a crime film about a London East End gang. Set in the 1930s American gangster tradition of Scarface and Little Caesar, its cast included Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren. The film presaged Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover (1989). MacKenzie was best at documenting the way tough, fearless working-class thugs could rise and fall as infamous criminals. Others of his films which achieved less critical and popular success have been Graham Greene’s The Honorary Consul (1983), The Fourth Protocol (1987) and The Last of the Finest (1990).
